Personality Disorders

A personality disorder is a mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, behaving, and functioning.  Someone with a personality disorder may have trouble perceiving and relating to different situations and people.  This can cause significant problems and challenges in relationships, social activities, work, and school.

Personality disorders are grouped into three clusters based upon related symptoms and characteristics.

Cluster A personality disorders are characterized by eccentric, odd thinking or actions.  These include paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders.

Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by dramatic, overly emotional or unpredictable thinking or behaviors.  This cluster includes antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders.

Cluster C personality disorders are characterized by fearful, anxious thinking or behaviors.  These include avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders.

Through treatment, many diagnosed with personality disorders are able to control symptoms and find a balance to lead a healthy life.
