Substance Related Disorders

Substance-abuse-related disorders affect a person’s brain and behavior and lead to being unable to control the use of a drug or medicine, legal or illegal.  Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine are also considered drugs.  Those with substance-abuse-related disorders may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes.

The symptoms of substance-abuse disorders may include:

  • The urge to use the drug regularly
  • Over time, needing more of the drug to get the same effect
  • Making certain that you maintain a supply of the drug
  • Spending money on the drug, even if you cannot afford it

Symptoms of substance-abuse-related disorders may be difficult to distinguish from other disorders that affect mood.  Some symptoms include problems at work or school, physical health issues like lack of motivation or energy, neglected appearance, changes in behavior, and experiencing money issues.

Developing a personalized treatment plan with a Premier Care Psychiatry provider is the first step to overcoming addiction and becoming drug-free.
